How did we ever live without TypeScript?”
— a thing we say to ourselves
Why can’t community health centers have great tech? That’s our mission at Relevant: bringing smart, friendly, innovative software to health centers across the country that serve low-income patients.
We care about feelings. We’re small, bootstrapped, and profitable.
Health centers use our platform to do things like plan for patient visits, identify high-risk patients, and measure the impact of their care. We’re eight years in, and have lots of interesting problems left to solve.
tl;dr: Create unreasonably good software for an underserved sector.
Ship well-factored, well-tested code. We’re working in TypeScript (React, Apollo, d3) on the client side, Ruby/Rails on the server, and Go for parts of our data pipeline. Your primary focus will be app features, but you’ll also touch infrastructure, internal tools, dev tools, and more.
Help solve core business problems, start to finish. You’ll spend a lot of time writing code, of course, but you’ll also be invited to learn how health centers work, speak directly with users, shadow our services team, and collaborate closely with product and design.
Have plenty of autonomy. We alternate between 6-week development cycles and 2- or 3-week “cooldowns” where autonomy is the name of the game. (If you're a nerd about this stuff, see this doc for a peek into our evolving processes.)
Make a big impact. Follow your nose in finding high-leverage contributions. Maybe it’s going deep on our JS setup, and coming back with an HMR upgrade that dramatically improves our development experience. Or talking with a colleague on our services team, and coming back with a simple but important product change.
5+ years professional software development experience. More than any specific language expertise, we’re interested in your ability to go deep, and to reason carefully about complicated things. But probably you are good at JavaScript.
You care about the whole thing. You are unhappy working in a feature factory. You care a lot about clean code and good abstractions, but if forced to decide, you’d say you care more about delivering value and delighting users.
Friendly, self-aware human. You’re an excellent listener. You’re deeply committed to the well-being and development of coworkers. You’re someone people always want on their team.
Excellent writer. We value good writing a lot, and work hard at it. Hopefully you do too, and would like to work somewhere where clear thinking is prized on PRs, in the wiki, in feature write-ups and architecture proposals, and so on, as much as in the codebase.
A desire to make healthcare better, with a focus on equity and social justice. We’re not the kind of startup chasing hyper-growth. We’re building tools used by safety-net organizations to fight health disparities, and are looking for candidates who find this focus compelling.
