How did we ever live without TypeScript?”
— a thing we say to ourselves
Relevant’s mission is to support community health centers in their drive to improve patient health. We do this by providing smart, friendly analytics software, along with hands-on support and consulting to help health centers tackle all kinds of data challenges. Founded in 2015, we are bootstrapped, profitable, and building for long-term impact.
Our product and engineering team is the engine behind this mission. The team operates with a low ritual philosophy, meaning we value deep work and autonomy over predigested tasks. We don’t just hand you a spec; we give you a domain problem and the latitude to solve it.
Relevant is looking for a lead engineer to help shape our product, tech stack, and company for years to come. This role involves shipping well-factored, well-tested software while serving as a steward of our codebase and a mentor to the team through a period of steady growth. Successful applicants may come from a variety of backgrounds, but if you have experience at a product company and are excited to learn about the domain, we’d love to chat with you.
tl;dr: Create unreasonably good software for an underserved sector.
Product and domain leadership. You aren't just building to spec. You’ll develop a deep understanding of how health centers work, speaking with users and collaborating with our Services team to ensure our technology actually solves problems for health centers.
Technical stewardship. You’ll spend plenty of time writing code (TypeScript, Rails, Go), but you’ll also be responsible for the big picture. You’ll lead architecture proposals, perform deep-dive code reviews, and ensure our abstractions stay clean as the product evolves.
Innovation & AI integration. You will help define our strategy for incorporating LLMs and AI into our product and internal workflows. We recognize that these technologies carry real risks and costs, but we believe responsibly applying them in service of community health centers is worth the effort.
Mentorship & growth. We are looking for someone who is deeply committed to the development of their coworkers. You’ll help maintain a culture of continual learning, and, if you’re interested, you may have a path forward as an Engineering Manager.
Infrastructure & tooling. You’ll identify and execute high-leverage technical improvements, whether that's upgrading our dev-experience tooling or refining our data pipeline.
Above all, we’re looking for general smarts, passion for the craft of programming, and excellent communication skills. More than any specific language expertise, we’re interested in your ability to go deep, and to reason carefully about complicated things. Here are some specific qualities we're looking for, to help see if we’re a good fit:
5+ years professional software development experience. You’ve seen how systems succeed and fail over time. You care deeply about clean code, but if forced to choose, you care more about delivering value and delighting users.
Comfortable with lots of autonomy. You are comfortable in a low ritual environment where you manage your own time and priorities. We typically alternate between 6-week development cycles and 2- or 3-week cooldowns where autonomy is the name of the game.
Excellent writer. You should be someone who enjoys writing thoughtful architecture docs, wiki entries, and PR descriptions.
AI positive. You are comfortable using AI tools to accelerate your own workflow and are excited about building AI-driven features for our users.
A desire to make healthcare better, with a focus on equity and social justice. We’re building tools used by safety-net organizations to fight health disparities, and are looking for candidates who find this focus compelling.
Nice to have:
Join a small team of people (currently, there are 23 of us) who love delighting our users and making a positive impact through tech.
Help us build a company culture that’s friendly, respectful, and encourages continual learning.
Competitive salary, excellent benefits, 401(k), PTO policy approaching European levels, general emphasis on happiness and sanity.
We are 100% remote (across the US and Canada) with twice yearly company retreats.
