Why can’t community health centers have great tech? That’s our mission at Relevant: bringing smart, friendly, innovative software to health centers across the country serving low-income patients. We care about feelings. We’re small, bootstrapped, and profitable. Check out our main jobs page to learn more.
tl;dr: Lead a small team working on analytics software that supports health equity.
Manage the engineering team. Run one-on-ones, performance reviews, all the day-to-day management things. More broadly, your brief is to cultivate a fun, motivated, effective team: to be looking out for everyone; to provide mentorship and guidance; to hire and retain great people.
Provide technical direction. What debt should we pay down—and what should we let be? Where can we stamp out complexity? Are we happy with our GraphQL patterns? In all of these cases, exercise judgment and build consensus around choices that ensure the long-term health of our codebase.
Ship code. Spend some of your time writing code: for joy, for velocity, to keep you grounded, to help you lead effectively. (Take a look at the job posting for a Lead Engineer to get a sense of what we look for in ICs, as well as details about our tech stack.)
Help steer the ship. Work with our product manager and others to shape what we’re going to build. Work with our engineers to improve how we build. Join our leadership team and help shape company direction, strategy, and culture.
10+ years professional software development experience. We are looking for someone our engineers will be excited to report up to. Someone whose judgment, experience, and perspective they can learn from. Among other things, this probably means you have deep fluency in JavaScript and/or Rails.
3+ years leadership experience. You’ve led at least one high-performing team. You like helping people grow, appreciate how hard good management is, have read some books about it, and reflected on your experience. You have the depth of experience and the maturity to lead a team of very smart ICs, most of whom are quite seasoned.
General smarts. You get to the bottom of issues—through reading, spelunking through code, talking to people—and come back with key insights. You bring clarity of thought to whatever you’re working on. You’re an excellent writer.
Gets stuff done. You excel at getting stuff done: forcing trade-offs, navigating around obstacles, overcoming inertia. You are also good at helping other people get stuff done.
Kind, self-aware human. You’re an excellent listener. You’re genuinely committed to the well-being and development of your colleagues, and it shows. People want to work with you, and want to earn your respect.
A desire to make healthcare better, with a focus on equity and social justice. We’re not the kind of startup chasing hyper-growth. We’re building tools used by safety-net organizations to fight health disparities, and are looking for candidates who find this focus compelling.
